Manuel J. Rodriguez

Manuel J. Rodriguez holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, a master’s degree in land use planning and regional development, and a doctorate in civil engineering (environment/water). Prior to joining ESD, he conducted postdoctoral research in the UK and France. Mr. Rodriguez holds the Research Chair in Drinking Water at Université Laval and teaches courses on water, the environment and land use planning. Its teaching and research programs, which are interdisciplinary in nature, focus on water quality management, adopting an integrated approach from the catchment to the citizen’s tap. His research and teaching fields include the territories of southern Quebec and Canada as well as vulnerable communities in northern areas (Nunavik and Nunavut) and developing countries. Professor Rodriguez has directed numerous research projects related to water and land, has conducted numerous national and international research collaborations, and has been part of several research networks and consortia. Its work has been funded by major federal and provincial research organizations in the three main sectors (natural sciences and engineering, health, and social sciences), as well as various public, parastatal and private organizations (a total of 100 projects). Over the course of his career, he has graduated as a director or co-director 26 doctoral students, 44 master’s research students, about fifteen postdoctoral fellows and a hundred professional master’s students. His research has led to the publication of more than 240 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, and 16 book chapters, totaling about 12,000 citations (Google Scholar), and have been presented at more than 500 conferences, congresses and workshops, both nationally and internationally (about one third by invitation). Recognized for his commitment to the training of new professionals and researchers, Mr. Rodriguez has received the annual Prix en enseignement de l’Université Laval pour l’encadrement aux cycles supérieurs, as well as the Award for Excellence in Mentoring from the People Network Consortium.
In addition to his research and teaching activities, Professor Rodriguez has taken on several administrative responsibilities, notably the direction of the CRAD, the ÉSAD, the doctoral program in ATDR and the master’s program in ATDR.
